In this director Prakash Deka's feature film debut, Deka expertly enables the plot to subtly unveil itself as we fall in love with the lead character Jahanvi for her tenacity and unreserved ownership of her individuality. But Jahanvi's unrelenting pursuit of a love-filled existence puts to the test our fundamental conceptions of what it means to delve into our actual selves in search of kinship—with both ourselves and others. Trans characters frequently exist on the periphery to serve as foils to challenge conservative ideas about gender. The 'Fireflies-Jonaki Porua' LGBTQ-themed movie received a Jury's Special Mention in the category of Feature Films at the 67th National Film Awards, which were announced on March 22. 'Fireflies' (Jonaki Porua), an Assamese film, has lit up stages both inside and outside of India. The LGBTQ-themed movie with Prakash Deka at the helm has been successful in capturing reviewers' and audiences' interest. The protagonist of the movie, played by Benjamin Daimary, took home the best actor prize at the 11th Kashish Mumbai International Queer Film Festival, one of the largest LGBTQIA+ film festivals in South Asia.
