In the French edition of the DVD, the director offers a version of the movie titled "2 x 5". This version shows the five sequences in the chronological order, from the moment the couple meets till their divorce. Subtle editing work has been applied to make the movie work.
Sophie Marceau and Vincent Cassel were approached to play the parts of Marion and Gilles.
Talking about her male co-star Stéphane Freiss, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi said, "On set we fell into friendship the way people fall in love. I'm very fond of him. We were pleased to see each other every morning[...] we became intimate very rapidly, as if we'd known each other a long time. You could see us in the street, walking or in a car or stopping for a coffee and you'd think we were a real couple."
Stéphane Freiss said the hotel rape sequence with Valeria Bruni Tedeschi was 'pretty hardcore', explaining that in the screenplay this scene was only a few lines long (it said 'they make love') and revealing that after filming François Ozon said the actors he wasn't expecting them to give so much.
