“Furies†is an action-packed Vietnamese film, serving as a prequel to the critically acclaimed “Furie.†However, this time, the film is directed by the star of the previous film, Veronica Ngo, who delves into the backstory of Thanh Soi, played by Thanh Hoa. The plot follows Bi, played by Dong Anh Quynh, an orphan who seeks revenge against a group of sadistic human traffickers along with a trio of fellow vigilantes, including Thanh and Hong, played by Toc Tien and Rima Thanh Vy, respectively, and their leader, Jacqueline, played by Ngo Thanh Van. Despite the dynamic action sequences choreographed by Samuel Kefi Abrikh, who also worked on “Furie,†the film falls short in moments where the characters need to connect beyond the violent scenes. However, the intense bond between the four women, who have all been victims of sexual assault, is well portrayed. A standout scene shows Bi struggling to control her violent response to a traumatic memory, which even Thanh cannot stop. Overall, “Furies†may not match the level of “Furie,†but it still delivers on adrenaline-pumping fight scenes and tackles important issues.
This is the first Netflix original film from the Vietnam.
The film was originally set to be released in 22 April 2022 on theaters, but was delayed to 23 March 2023 on Netflix.
"Bi's mother: We are all born equal. What makes us different is the choices we make."
"[first lines] Bi: In this world, we all have to make a choice between light and darkness. But how many of us can choose wisely?"
