Made with the intention of pulling production company Daiei out of debt. The film failed at the box office, and Daiei filed for bankruptcy about six months later. The low budget of the film is evidenced by the extensive use of stock footage; all scenes of Gamera battling other monsters are taken from previous films in the series.
Final Showa era Gamera movie, and final Showa era giant monster film. The Showa era refers to the giant monster films made between Godzilla (1954) and this film. The Heisei era of giant monster films would begin with Godzilla 1985 (1985) but the Gamera series would not be revived for the Heisei era until Gamera: Guardian of the Universe (1995) which ignored the previous films.

This film was shot in spherical widescreen (1:85:1) and all of the previous Gamera features were shot in anamorphic widescreen (2.35:1). All of the extensive footage from the previous films had to be adapted and re-framed for use in this film.

"[first lines] Narrator: There are 200 billion stars present in the Milky Way Galaxy. Our sun and its nine planets consist of just one solar system within the galaxy. There are billions of other such systems many greater than our own solar system. But, compared to the enormous size of the universe itself even a galaxy is but a tiny pinpoint of life. In our vast universe, there are billions of other such galaxies that are just as big. The universe is limitless in size, and mankind is not the only creature in it that wages wars against itself. There are others who make war throughout the universe. From the farthest reaches of space comes a space ship bent on murder and destruction. It is the pirate space ship Zanon."
"Policeman: You've been reading too much of those comics. You know very well that those stories are just plain fiction. Keiichi: Well, that stinks. Policeman: Now you kids best run along home, or I'll have you arrested! [laughs] Policeman: I really had you scared that time!"
