Originally planned to be called "Babysitter From Hell", in which Maggie would become possessed by the devil and terrorize the children she was babysitting. This was later changed to "Girlfriend From Hell", which would allow more adult themes and have more grown up actors working full time.
Liane Curtis was so determined to play Maggie that she was let go from her talent agency at the time, who weren't pleased that she insisted on appearing in the film. She says she doesn't regret it.
Alice and Rocco's house was a popular filming location for low-budget B-movies, including Murder Weapon (1989), Linnea Quigley's Horror Workout (1990), and Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama (1988).
Ricki Lake visited the location in downtown Los Angeles to wish cast and crew good luck during the filming of the scene with the thugs in the back alley.
Writer/director Daniel Peterson and star Liane Curtis have a child together named Tyler Curtis.
