Originally released in 2009 on DVD, GoatSucker was remastered in 2017 and released on Amazon Video. The main differences are enhanced color and sound. A few of the scenes are subtly cut different than the DVD version, but most people wouldn't recognize the change unless they watched the DVD and VOD versions side by side. But the changes are improvements.
The majority of GoatSucker was filmed in the backwoods of Dawson Springs KY. Most of the trail scene locations were so deep into the woods that cars could only get everyone so close. People and equipment had to be taken part of the way by walking or via ATV.
A portion of the wooded area used in GoatSucker, shows up in two of Big Biting Pig Productions later movies. The "hunters" scene in "HELL IS FULL" & The Lone Camper scene in "IT LIVES IN THE ATTIC"
Most of the movie is filmed outdoors, so to avoid rain, the majority of the movie was shot in August. August is typically a very hot month in Kentucky, but luckily most of the shooting days turned out to be quite comfortable.
Writer & Director Steve Hudgins said that one of the important aspects of making a good "monster in the woods" movie was to make sure that there was enough going on with the characters and the story outside of the monster, to be a movie in and of itself, so that if there was no GoatSucker there'd still be an interesting movie. Throwing the GoatSucker element into that story then takes it to another level.
"Brad: You folks here for the GoatSucker hiking tour?"
"Cassy's Father: You can't keep going out chasing a creature that doesn't exist! Cassy: It does exist!"
