This is Adam Sandler's first starring role in a film. Adam is so embarrassed by this film that he rarely speaks about it and doesn't even acknowledge it as his first movie, regarding Billy Madison (1995) as his first movie instead. He has openly admitted that this isn't a good movie but that it was a good experience for him.
This is Adam Sandler's feature film debut. It was shot on a small, weathered cruise ship that sailed for a week in May 1989 from New Orleans to Cancun, Mexico. The ship was going to the Miss Universe Pageant and was filled with 50 past and present beauty queens from all over the United States.
The character of Dickie Diamond is based on comedian Andrew Dice Clay.
The project went from concept to completion in three months. It was written in three days, cast in one day, prepared in two days and filmed in six days, with two additional days for pick-ups. The budget was a mere $800,000.
A sneak preview of the film was on October 26, 1989. The film was first released regionally, as "The Unsinkable Shecky Moskowitz", on October 27, 1989. It remained in second run theaters until 1990. It made its television debut in June 1990 on Up All Night (1989) and was retitled "Babes Ahoy". Released on video in European territories between 1990 and 1992, it was finally released on video in the U.S. in 1995 as "Going Overboard", one week after the video release of Billy Madison (1995).
"Schecky Moskowitz: Sir, hi! What's your name? Dave: Dave. Schecky Moskowitz: Hey, Dave! What do you do for a living? Dave: Well, I'm a construction worker. Schecky Moskowitz: A construction worker? Alright, what do you construct? Dave: I construct buildings. What the fuck else would I construct? Schecky Moskowitz: Okaaaay... so, Dave, do you think constructing is an easy job, or is it a hard job? Dave: Listen, butthole, why don't you quit trying to be funny? Because all it's doing is pissing me off."
"Dickie Diamond: [to Shecky] Look at ya, you look just like ya sister... A PIG!"
