By the orange color on his shoulder rank insignia, Capt. Stephen Kirby is a member of the First or Second Dragoon Regiment. Dragoons were mounted infantry, separate from the Cavalry, and trained to fight mounted or on foot as Infantry. These units were re-designated as the First and Second Cavalry Regiments later in 1861.
