According to director Just Jaeckin the final temple location of the film was actually shot on one stage with "roll-away" walls that were dressed and rearranged before each scene to give the appearance of many different rooms.
Inspired by a cartoon strip which first appeared in the US magazine "Bizarre" in 1946.
Just Jaeckin used his own butterfly collection for the opening credits sequence.
Three months were spent on rehearsal.

Here, move as close as you can. [They can't reach each other. Willard picks up a straw with his teeth and begins gently poking Gwendoline's face with it]"
