Kit Connor originally auditioned for the role of Charlie Spring.
The characters of Imogen and Isaac are original to the series and not in the original graphic novels. According to Alice Oseman, Imogen was created to give Nick a friend that wasn't a member of the main group, and to bring "a bit more drama and angst" to the story. Isaac replaces the character of Aled, who Oseman felt she couldn't give him a satisfying storyline without ignoring important elements from her novel "Radio Silence."
On May 20th 2022 It was announced by Alice Oseman that the show was renewed for two more seasons.
Executive producer Patrick Walters backed the original Heartstopper volume one campaign on Kickstarter and pitched the show to See-Saw management after reading the comic.
