In the book, the dog Maggie steals was originally a purebred pug. However, director Curtis Hanson opted to change it, as he cited that movies tend to inspire people to adopt the same dog breed featured in a film. Hanson opted for a mixed breed, hoping that it would inspire people to adopt a shelter pet instead.
The film was originally planned to have Toni Collette as Maggie Feller and Sarah Michelle Gellar as Rose Feller. After Gellar dropped out, Collette agreed to play Rose and the role de Maggie was given to Cameron Diaz.
Director Curtis Hanson approached Toni Collette before filming and asked the actress about gaining weight for the part. Collette had complied and proceeded to gain 25 pounds for the part, which she subsequently lost during the film's shooting, which is to reflect her character.
In the scene where Maggie is auditioning for MTV, the teleprompter says they are going to premiere a new Eminem music video. This was a nod to director Curtis Hanson's previous film, 8 Mile (2002), which starred and was inspired by the life of the rapper.
In Her Shoes (2005) was never released on VHS, making it one of the first movies to be released only on DVD.
"Maggie Feller: I carry your heart with me. I carry it in my heart. I am never without it. Anywhere I go, you go, my dear. And whatever is done by only me... is your doing, my darling. I fear no fate... for you are my fate, my sweet. I want no world, for, beautiful... you are my world, my true. Here is the deepest secret no one knows. Here is the root of the root... and the bud of the bud... and the sky of the sky of a tree called life... which grows higher than the soul can hope... or mind can hide. It is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart. I carry your heart. I carry it in my heart."
"Maggie Feller: The art of losing isn't hard to master; so many things seem... f... filled... with the intent to be lost that their loss is no disaster. Lose something every day. Accept the fluster of lost door keys, the hour badly spent. The art of losing isn't hard to master. I lost two cities, lovely ones. And, vaster, some realms I owned, two rivers, a continent. I miss them, but it wasn't a disaster. Even losing you... the joking voice, a gesture I love... I shan't have lied. It's evident the art of losing's not too hard to master though it may look like... Write it!... like disaster."
