Chelsea the Mermaid was clearly modeled after Ariel from The Little Mermaid (1989), while her personality and role in the film is closer to the latter film's villain Ursula the Sea Witch. Coincidentally, this movie will be released a month after The Little Mermaid (2023), the latter film's live-action remake.
Dreamworks Animation's 44th theatrically released feature film.
Kirk DeMicco's second collaboration with Nicole Byer, after Vivo (2021). Coincidentally, that film was originally planned to be produced by DreamWorks Animation before it was acquired by Sony Pictures Animation in 2016.
Not counting sequels, this is DreamWorks Animation's twelfth film to be named after the main character(s). The first eleven were Shrek (2001), Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (2002), Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas (2003), The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005), Megamind (2010), Puss in Boots (2011), Turbo (2013), Mr. Peabody & Sherman (2014), The Boss Baby (2017), and Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (2017).
The fifth DreamWorks Animation film that's not a sequel to be subtitled, after Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (2002), Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas (2003), The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005), and Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (2017).
