Nearly a decade earlier, Ward Roberts bought several custom-made hand puppets from Etsy to entertain his children and use in YouTube videos. A puppet who was originally named Scary became the prototype for Chuck, complete with the voice that Roberts had always used for the character. Tom Devlin created a new version with limbs and animatronic eyes for the film.
Shot in the real home of stars Ward Roberts (Howie) and his daughter Bo Roberts (Ruby) . Ward actually built the treehouse that Ruby remarks Howie built.
Bo Roberts (Ruby) sketched the design for the spaceship, which was passed along to FX man Tom Devlin, who brought her drawing to life.
The original concept was that Jhey Castles (the Blue Draconian) and Jeremiah Birkett (Nathan Droogal) would portray Men in Black type agents, but Ward Roberts felt that was a little too derivative. Realizing friends Richard Riehle (Willy Felson) and Mike C. Nelson (Marvin Felson) bore a physical resemblance, he revised the roles to have them portraying father-and-son, and he swapped out black suits for Hawaiian shirts.
The cast and crew is comprised of a group of friends who have been making both long and short independent films together for years, generally in the horror-comedy genre. Ward Roberts wanted to make something that was family-friendly, and he wrote the roles specifically for each performer.
