Trivia

According to the film's press notes, the milestones and achievements of the Carter Center include: (1) Leading a coalition that has reduced incidences of Guinea worm disease from an estimated 3.5 million in 1986 to about 25,000 today, making it likely to be the first disease since smallpox to be wiped off the face of the Earth ; (2) Observing more than 67 elections in 26 countries to help establish and strengthen democracies ; (3) Teaching techniques that have helped more than 8 million small-scale farmers in 15 African nations to double or triple grain production ; (4) Furthering avenues to peace in Ethiopia, Eritrea, Liberia, Sudan, Uganda, the Korean Peninsula, Haiti, and Bosnia and Herzegovina ; (5) Helping to establish a village-based health care delivery system in thousands of communities in Africa that now have trained health care personnel and volunteers to distribute drugs and provide health education ; (6) Strengthening international standards for human rights and the voices of individuals defending those rights in their communities worldwide ; and (7) Advancing efforts to improve mental health care and diminish the stigma against people with mental illness.

The film's closing epilogue reads: "Jimmy and Rosalynn still live in Plains. Population 635."

The film's 2007 production notes declared: "Carter Center Celebrates 25th Anniversary". They continued: "ATLANTA - The Carter Center, a not-for-profit organization founded in 1982 by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn [Rosalynn Carter], is celebrating 25 years of progress in advancing peace, health, and hope worldwide. The Center works to secure a broad range of human rights as the foundation for peace and development, helping individuals and communities in more than 70 nations obtain the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to improve their own lives. 'Self-governance, freedom from political persecution, adequate food, and access to health care-these rights give people self-respect, human dignity, and hope for the future,' says President Carter. 'They are essential to creating a world at peace.' The Carter Center was started as a place where the former president and first lady could continue working on issues important to them after they left the White House. Today, the Carters lead a permanent staff of 160 working with world leaders and people at the grass roots in many of the poorest nations."

The film's Director's Statement by its director Jonathan Demme reads: "I have always held President Carter [Jimmy Carter] in high esteem, so I leapt at the opportunity to do a documentary portrait of him. I chose the book tour of Palestine Peace Not Apartheid as the backbone of the documentary before reading the book. I knew that with the kind of subject matter promised by the title, there would probably be a lot of fireworks on that journey. I love how his un-self-censored behavior and attitudes help reveal how authentic and deep President Carter's faith-based motivation really is - and how terrifically complicated he is as a human being, with such an active sense of humor, an encyclopedic knowledge of a seeming endless array of subjects - and how super-sensitive yet bold, feisty and obstinate he can be at times - and that he reveals how a devoted, adoring husband like him fits so organically with the fellow who "loves the ladies." Every time I see this film, President Carter makes me believe that - as frightening and appalling as so many things are in the world today - that there is nevertheless a very real possibility for peace and better lives for future generations if we strive to somehow get along and if we aspire to defining the upside of being human."
