Nivin Pauly was the only actor considered for the lead role.
The film was announced in late August 2016 and was expected to begin filming in early 2017, which was delayed to September of that year.
Had 1700 screenings over 350 screens on its first day of release in Kerala, a record at the time for the state, resulting in the highest ever opening-day collection at the Kerala box office up to that point.
Binod Pradhan handled the majority of the cinematography, working on the film for 110 days out of the 161 day shoot, but had to leave before finishing the film due to delays, as he was signed to shoot Kalank (2019). Thus cinematographer Nirav Shah was brought on to handle the climax over the next 40 days and cinematographer Sudhir Palsane took over for the last 11 days in Sri Lanka. Shah and Palsane are not credited in the film but are thanked at the beginning.
The film was initially set to release on 15 August 2018, but this was delayed first by a week in order to complete post-production and then to 11 October due to the floods in Kerala that August.
