TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

Anthony LaPaglia had to work with a dialect coach to regain his native Australian accent. He had lost it from years of working on American movies.

The first film to win all of the top six categories of the Australian Film Institute (AFI) awards: best picture, best director, best actress, best actor, best supporting actress, best supporting actor. It also won for best adapted screenplay. This record remained unbroken until all 13 AFI categories were swept by Somersault (2004).

Glenn Robbins was considered for the lead role of Detective Leon Zat, but Anthony LaPaglia was eventually cast. Robbins was then cast as the role of Pete O'May.

Included among the "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die", edited by Steven Schneider.

This movie is based on screenwriter Andrew Bovell's own stage play called "Speaking in Tongues".

Popular Dialogues

"Leon Zat: [the morning after Leon admitted having an affair] I fucked up, all right? People fuck up. Sonja Zat: Really? Well, I don't. You know what's so easy, Leon? It's so easy to go out and find somebody. You know what's hard? What's hard is not to."

"Leon Zat: [Leon has chest pains after having sex with Jane] I get this pain in my chest sometimes. Jane O'May: You know, you really should have told me that you have a weak heart. Leon Zat: I don't. Jane O'May: It's because I don't want to have an affair with... Leon Zat: For Christ's sake, I don't have a weak heart, all right? And this is not an affair, it's a one-night stand except it happened twice."
