For the most part paying Queen Mary 2 passengers were unaware of the film being shot. Signs were placed around live shooting locations. They were met with mostly indifference.
As usual for a Steven Soderbergh directed movie, he's also cinematographer (under the pseudonym Peter Andrews) and editor (Mary Ann Bernard).
August 2019 - Filming taking place on board the ocean liner Queen Mary 2 on a transatlantic crossing between New York and Southampton.
Contrary to reports that all the dialogue was improvised, director Steven Soderbergh has explained that there were many key scenes throughout the film which were completely scripted, while other scenes were written as prose by Deborah Eisenberg, grew from improv with the actors, and were then further revised by her. Soderbergh called it "highly structured improvisation" and estimated the ratio as 70 percent improvised vs. 30 percent scripted dialogue.
The film cast includes two Oscar winners: Meryl Streep and Dianne Wiest; and two Oscar nominees: Lucas Hedges and Candice Bergen.
"Alice: I mean, it's... you shouldn't be shy with this kind of thing, this... this attraction to someone. I think attraction is... It's the animating force in the universe, really. Tyler: That's a fact. Alice: Well, like... Gravity or the pull of the poles, what pulls the monarch butterflies... to fly across the world. If you feel attracted to someone from your heart, you know... and you look at them and you feel and you can see their soul... That's... There is... There's no bad version of that, to want to be a part of that. And we should... Oh, God... treasure it. It's, it's... We're lucky to have that feeling. It's the greatest, it's the fullest... expression of what it is to be alive."
"Alice: When I read this novel, it's impossible for me not to think what a miracle it is That the universe emerged, what a miracle it is that consciousness emerged. And what a miracle it is that Blodwyn Pugh, her thoughts and experiences, that they could reach across time and reach into my consciousness. That's a miracle."
