  • Story:
Packaged and sold as an outdoor actioner, Many Rivers to Cross is as much a comedy as anything else. Robert Taylor stars as 18th century trapper Bushrod Gentry, who is himself entrapped into marriage by the spunky Mary Stuart Cherne (Eleanor Parker). Escaping his marital responsibilities (which were impressed upon him on threat of death), Gentry heads into the North Country, with Mary in hot pursuit. Hero and heroine spend the rest of the picture taking turns rescuing each other from hostile Indians. Some of the humor is predicated upon the wholesale slaughter of the "redskins", and as such is a bit hard to take when seen today. Supporting Taylor and Parker are Victor McLaglen as the heroine's burly father, and TV-stars-to be James Arness (Gunsmoke) and Russell Johnson and Alan Hale Jr. (Gilligan's Island).

TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

Bushrod Gentry mentions going to the Northwest Territories several times. This would place the time of the film somewhere between 1787 and 1803. It encompassed and area that would eventually become the states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and part of Minnesota. In the scenes regarding Cadmus getting spectacles, George Washington is spoken of as if he is still alive, so that would narrow the date ranger further to 1787 and 1799.

Cyril J. Mockridge's score was conducted (uncredited) by Miklós Rózsa. This was Mockridge's only picture at MGM, on loan from 20th Century Fox.

Russell Johnson and Alan Hale Jr. starred on Gilligan's Island (1964).

Third and final film in four years to co-star Robert Taylor and Eleanor Parker, who play lovers in all three films.

Jeff Richards and Russ Tamblyn would play brothers Benjamin and Gideon in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954).

Popular Dialogues

"Mary Stuart Cherne: It's just, I loved you so much... I thought you'd have to love me back."

"Bushrod Gentry: I thought they called you Stepping Woman. Mary Stuart Cherne: I been stepping all day."
