Single and lusty Asha's (Rekha) affairs with three men (Randhir Kapoor, Rakesh Roshan, Jeetendra) lands her with a baby-girl, and she must relocate to distant Mauritius to start life anew. She makes up a story about her husband, Mr. Brittania, while admitting her daughter in school, heroically saving lives of numerous Indians and being unable to save himself. Now Asha has a grown up daughter, Jiya (Sanober Kabir). She finds out that Jiya wants to marry Mrs. Chaudhary's (Shashikala) grandson, Raj (Rahat Khan). Asha's three beaus also contact her one by one that they will be coming, with their respective wives and families to tow, to visit Mauritius. Asha's past is now coming back to haunt her, and Asha must use all her wits to see herself through this crisis.

The film was titled Mother 98. The film's audio CD and cassettes were also released with that name. When it was delayed for over a year, Sawan Kumar Tak removed the "98" from the title.
Some 20 years before mother 98 started, during the shooting of sajaan ki saheli, the filmaker sawaan kumar had mentioned the subject of mother 98 to rekha. Rekha at that time she told sawaan kumar that he should wait for her for 20 years then she will act in mother and sawaan kumar agreed to her and he waited for 20 years than he maid mother with rekha.
In 1996/97 no filmaker was starting new film due to some reason and after many months passed only sawan kumar started a film, the film was mother and the mahurat shot was taken on veteran shashikala.
The lyrics of the song "Biwi Hain Cheez Sajawat Ki " were changed due to censor problems.
