TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

On its original release, the film made little impact at the box-office and its press was mainly negative. This was partly because at the time the issue of paedophilia and child sexual abuse was a great taboo, rarely referred to or spoken about, and merely to produce a film dealing openly with the issue was deemed sordid and distasteful.

Final feature film appearance for silent star Estelle Brody.

Popular Dialogues

"Martha: This isn't an ordinary crime like burglary or a holdup."

"[Peter brings Jean home. The police and many townpeople gather. Sally hugs Jean. Clarence Olderberry Jr. approaches them, grief-stricken and distraught after discovering what his father did to Lucille] Clarence Jr: [to Peter and Sally] He killed her! My father... he killed that little girl! Sally Carter: Ho, no! Jean Carter: Mommy... I was frightened. Sally Carter: [hugs Jean closely] It's all right, darling. You're safe now. You're home. [Sally takes Jean into the house] Sally Carter: Excuse me. [the crowd lets Sally pass. Clarence Jr. looks guiltily at Peter] Clarence Jr: [remorsefully] He killed her! [Peter turns back and enters the house] Clarence Jr: [to the crowd] He killed her! He killed her! [Clarence Jr. bursts into tears. The policemen take him away]"
