For the productions of Newsies on Broadway, the song King of New York has many tap dancing solos on tables. But the sound on the wood was often drowned out and not heard in the theatre, so microphones were taped to the bottom of tables so everything was heard.
This performance of the musical combines members of the original Broadway cast with members of the touring cast.
Jeremy Jordan (Jack Kelly), Kara Lindsay (Katherine), Ben Fankhauser (Davey), Andrew Keenan-Bolger (Crutchie), Mark Aldrich (Seitz), Tommy Bracco (Spot Conlon), John E. Brady (Wiesel/Mr. Jacobi), and Kevin Carolan (Nunzio/Governor Roosevelt) all reprise their roles from the original Broadway cast.
Due to its overwhelming success at the Paper Mill Playhouse, Disney announced Newsies would be moving to the Nederlander Theater on Broadway for a limited engagement of 105 performances starting March 29, 2012. After becoming the fastest Disney Broadway show to turn a profit, it was extended even longer and performed a total of 1,005 performances.
Christian Bale originally played the lead role of Jack Kelly in Newsies (1992). The film was considered a box-office failure at the time, but has since developed a huge fanbase and following after being released on home video. Since it was turned into a Broadway production, it has finally received major success. Bale made it very clear in an "Entertainment Weekly" interview that he has no intention on seeing the new production. He said, "I'm not really into musicals but I wish them the best. And I'm sure the person playing the character I played exceeded whatever I did, and congratulations to them."
