Steve Martin and Scott Caan did not get along during filming because of Caan's reckless behavior toward a stuntperson in a scene in which his character smashes a beer bottle over the head of a man in a bar.
This is the second time Steve Martin plays a dentist, the first being his role in "Little Shop of Horrors" (1986) as Orin Scrivello, a character far more "disturbed" than Frank Sangster.
Helena Bonham Carter appeared in Merlin with Sam Neill and Isabella Rosselini. Laura Dern appeared with Neill in Jurassic Park and with Rosselini in Blue Velvet and Wild at Heart. Steve Martin and Merlin cast member Martin Short appeared together in Father of the Bride and Prince of Egypt, along with Jurassic Park cast members B.D. Wong and Jeff Goldblum.
