One thing added into the movie from the play was that Malcolm X had a love of photography. Famous photographer Gordon Parks described Malcolm X as using the camera to take evidence. The closing shot was based on a picture Malcolm X took of Ali.
Events in this film take place February 1964. Sam Cooke was shot to death December 11, 1964 in a bizarre motel incident.
Leslie Odom Jr.(Sam Cooke) and Nicolette Robinson (Barbara Cooke) are married in real life.
First film by a Black female director selected by the Venice Film Festival.
The conflict between Sam Cooke and Malcolm X was fictitious. It came from screenwriter Kemp Powers' struggle as the only black writer on staff for Star Trek: Discovery (2017) and the conflict he felt over how much of himself to insert into the show.
"Sam Cooke: Everybody talks about they wantin' a piece of the pie, well I don't. I want the goddamn recipe."
"Sam Cooke: It's time to take this party to the Fountainbleu, Whoo! [starts singing] Sam Cooke: Havin' a party... Malcolm X: You've obviously forgotten, brother Cassius no longer drinks. Sam Cooke: And you obviously haven't smelled his breath in the last hour."
