TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

In the original script, Pat's PA Claire was not pregnant - 'Victoria Wood' wrote the pregnancy into the script to accommodate Celia Imrie's real-life pregnancy.

Victoria Wood later stated that she found herself to share similar characteristics with Pat (Julie Walters) and found that character much more relatable. However, Wood felt that Walters would be more successful in the portrayal of Pat, and so instead took the part of the shy, timid Margaret.

The working title for Pat and Margaret was simply 'Sisters'.

Shirley Stelfox who plays Vera, Pat and Margaret's mother, is only 9 years older than Julie Walters, who plays Pat her daughter.

Julie Walters and Shirley Stelfox previously starred together in 'Personal Services' (1987).

Popular Dialogues

"[Jim is sitting in his car which has signs "JIM" and "MARGARET" at the top of the windscreen. Wistfully he removes the "MARGARET" sign. Margaret arrives. Jim's mother is watching from the garden gate] Margaret: Jim, do you want to make it up or not? Jim's Mother: Now just a minute. Margaret: No conferring. If we're doing it, then we have to get a place, live together, none of this fannying about. We either go for it, or it's finito. Jim's Mother: There'll be no living together if I have anything to do with it. Jim: [to his mother] You *don't* have anything to do with it. So button up or ship out. It's your fault tha never learned me to read and I could never get a qualification. Jim: [to Margaret] Yes. You're on, Margaret. I've loved you since the first minute you gave me extra gravy. You've given me care. And comfort. And a wonderful sex life. Come here. [they hug] Jim's Mother: A sex life? You've had a sex life? *Where* have you had it? Jim: On your bed. Jim's Mother: [horrified] Not on the eiderdown?"

"Margaret: Mum, did you ever love us? Vera: I don't think so. I don't think I knew what love was till I bred my first Afghan."
