  • Story:
Grace Metalious' once-notorious bestseller Peyton Place is given a lavish -- and necessarily toned-down -- film treatment in this deluxe 20th Century-Fox production. Set during WWII, the film concentrates on several denizens of the outwardly respectable New England community of Peyton Place. Top-billed Lana Turner plays shopkeeper Constance McKenzie, who tries to make up for a past indiscretion -- which resulted in her illegitimate daughter Allison (Diane Varsi) -- by adopting a chaste, prudish attitude towards all things sexual. In spite of herself, Constance can't help but be attracted to handsome new teacher Michael Rossi (Lee Philips). Meanwhile, the restless Allison, who'd like to be as footloose and fancy-free as the town's "fast girl" Betty Anderson (Terry Moore), falls sincerely in love with mixed-up mama's boy Norman Page (Russ Tamblyn).

TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

Immediately after the graduation sequence, there is a quick scene showing Allison MacKenzie (Diane Varsi) at a typewriter. She is in the same pose that showed author Grace Metalious on the back of the paperback. The detail is exact, right down to the position of her body and clothing.

Some of the shots of the New England fall were shot for The Trouble with Harry (1955).

Lana Turner, Hope Lange, Diane Varsi and Russ Tamblyn all give their only Oscar-nominated performances in this film. As of 2018, this film's four one-time nominees in the acting categories is a record.

This film received nine Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. It failed to win a single Academy Award.

Susan Strasberg was initially set to play Allison. However, when she upped her salary, she was fired. For a short period, Debbie Reynolds was set to replace her. Eventually, 20 famous actresses were screen tested before the unknown Diane Varsi got the role.
