The role of Jezebel Jack was originally written for Jim Varney, but the actor's lung cancer diagnosis prevented him from performing. After his death, a rumor was perpetuated that he had been working on a non-existent project titled "Ernest the Pirate".

Tim Curry played other aquatic adventurer and/or pirate roles in Peter Pan and the Pirates (1990), The Pirates of Dark Water (1991), The Little Mermaid (1992), Muppet Treasure Island (1996), Titanic (1996), McHale's Navy (1997), and Back to the Sea (2012).
