There was a great deal of consternation among many of the cast and crew when it came to light halfway through production that director Victor Salva had been convicted for child molestation several years earlier. The main cause of concern was that many of the production members had brought their family to the set.
Nathan Forrest Winters, who was the star of Victor Salva's Clownhouse (1990) and his abuse victim, protested the film's theatrical release.
John Carpenter had been offered to direct the film, but pledged to direct "In the Mouth of Madness (1994)" and "Village Of The Damned (1995)."
Composers John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith both showed interest in scoring Powder. Williams demanded to see the cut first before he decides to do it. This was not possible due to the very tight schedule between finishing the film and releasing. So Goldsmith finally got the nod. Director Salva stated he is a big fan of Goldsmith's work, especially his film music from the 60's, but they both differed in what the film needed.
In a scene that takes in a view of downtown Wheaton City in the movie, the Plaza Theater marquee indicates the movie playing inside is "The Nature of the Beast". That was a movie released in 1995 which also starred Lance Henriksen, who's Sheriff Doug Barnum in this movie.
"Donald Ripley: It has become appallingly clear that our technology has surpassed our humanity. Powder: Albert Einstein. Donald Ripley: When I look at you, I have hope that maybe one day our humanity will surpass our technology."
"Powder: If you thought I was so intelligent would you ask me if I understood?"
