Ram Lakhan

This film was made only after Subhash Ghai had scrapped his dream project Devaa, which had Amitabh Bachchan in the title role.

Prior to Ram Lakhan Subhsh Ghai had shelved the film "Devaa" (1987) Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Raaj Kumar, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Shammi Kapoor, Ila Arun, Music by Laxmikant Pyarelal, Produced and Directed by Subhash Ghai. The film was shelved due to Amitabh and Subahsh Ghai having several ego clashes. Subhash Ghai felt Amitabh was not being professional. He would keep arriving late on the sets,then leave saying he felt ill. amitabh was indeed feeling ill and Ghai could see that. Amitabh would promise to make up for the missed time the next day but would back out from his promise. The next day Habib Nadiadwala called Subhash Ghai and yelled at him for making Amitabh shot while being sick. Ghai did not like this and had enough. Amitabh's secretary Sheetal would deal and talk to Subhash Ghai. Ghai hated this. Subhash Ghai wanted to deal with Amitabh directly. Then Amitabh would shoot only a few days then cancel the other dates given. Subhash Ghai felt Amitabh was not concentrating properly on the film. Subhash felt this film was a once in a lifetime film and needed proper attention. Subhash Ghai also was very upset with the film's joint producer Habib Nadiadwala. Habib would constantly speak on Amitabh's behalf and yell at Ghai for making Amitabh shoot for the film despite Amitabh being very ill. Subhash stated that Amitabh canceled some dates and had given them to other producers.He would not have minded but felt Amitabh was not being fully honest. Subhash felt a certain distance with Amitabh and felt they did not bond well. Subhash needed a family like atmosphere. Subhash finally flew down to Madras where Amitabh was shooting for Shahenshah and broke the news to him. Amitabh felt that maybe Ghai was shelving the film due to the Bofors scandal . Ghai denied this and said he was shelving it due to the stress he was going thru while shooting the film. Amitabh on the other hand did not like Ghai's attitude and was not happy with his working style. Plus Boney Kapoor kept advising Ghai that Devaa would be too expensive a film and would not recover its money. He should start Ram Lakhan with Anil Kapoor as that would be more financially a better film.

Film's soundtrack released in October 1988 and was the first hindi film to have its soundtrack in CD format. Before Ram Lakhan audio cassette and LP were the preferred audio formats.

Anil's character LAKHAN became a rage.

Gulshan Grover's negative character Kesariya Vilayati became quite famous with his famous dialog Badman.
