The writing of this episode required significant exposition to explain the absence of several beloved characters from the series, including Detective Lynn Ligett-Smith; Roe's boyfriend Martin Bartell; and erstwhile juvenile delinquent-turned bird dog Perry Dell - all of this on the heels of John Queensland being written out of the series in Last Scene Alive (2018). Further altering the tone of this episode is the unexplained substitution of an unfamiliar actor playing newspaper editor Macon Turner.
