IMDbVincent Price signed on for the film after reading the first draft of its script; however, the studio demanded re-writes in order to reduce production costs. The re-writes reportedly removed much of what Price liked about the film's first draft.
The film's director, Edward Bernds, has said that, contrary to rumors at the time, he was not hired to replace Kurt Neumann, who had directed the previous film The Fly (1958). Neumann had died in 1958 before this film began production, and before his death he was not being considered by the producers of it for the director's job.
The film's script was written specifically to use the standing sets from the previous film The Fly (1958).
The film's producers decided that Vincent Price was all they needed to star in it, so they hired no other actors from the previous film The Fly (1958). Filming was completed in March 1959 for a July 1959 release.
This film was shown as the top half of a double feature with the film The Alligator People (1959).
