Yul Brynner insisted he would only make this film if Steve McQueen was not involved. McQueen initially expressed interest in appearing, but then decided the plot was too absurd and turned the film down.
Yul Brynner (Chris) was the only actor to reprise his role from The Magnificent Seven (1960).
Although this film revisits the village from the first movie, it was shot in Spain, not Mexico. Among the many reasons were the difficulties that occurred between the American filmmakers and the Mexican crew and government censors during the shooting of the first film.
Steve McQueen didn't repeat his role as Vin, choosing to appear in The Sand Pebbles (1966) instead, two months later. It turned out to be a better choice since he was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar, and the movie for Best Picture.
Warren Oates contracted hepatitis B and dysentery while making this film.
"Vin: I came after you so that you'd know there was a price on your head. Chris: How much? Vin: Five hundred. Chris: Dollars? Vin: Pesos."
"Vin: I heard you were riding shotgun for the Overland Stage. Chris: I was. My doctor told me to quit. For my health. Vin: Why? Chris: Too much lead in the air."
