IMDbShantaram is an Apple TV+ original thriller series based on the novel of the same name by Gregory David Roberts. Shataram is an Australian robber who flees to India only to rediscover life. The series is largely a hit and a miss especially since the book is extremely complex to adapt in the first place. It takes us on the journey with Shantaram as he lives in 1980s Bombay, experiencing life like the locals. There is adventure, thrill, and suspense, but not everything is as hunky-dory as expected. The show gets boring in the middle, and carrying through 12 episodes in the first season is surely a burden. The writing is lacklustre and leaves a lot to imagination. Also, if you are someone who read and loved the book, please avoid this as you will be left disappointed by the end of it.
Was originally in development as a feature film at Warner Bros with Johnny Depp attached to star with Peter Weir as director. Russell Crowe and Joel Edgerton were also considered before the project was retooled into a series.
Shantaram is the Hindu name Indian villagers give Lin, the narrator: It means "man of God's peace." Lin - or Linbaba, as he is also known - was not always worthy of the name.
Pre-production had to be delayed due to the writer's strike in 2007/08.
The book has a first-person point of view so the actions of the characters are only known through what Lin sees of them. The series expands that.
