Shaolin Soccer Review

A 2001 sports comedy, Shaolin Soccer, in which a motley crew of soccer and martial arts misfits get together to form a victorious soccer squad. There is considerable comedy violence and crude humor in the film. Excellent performances in this mix of humor and high-flying soccer action. Stephen Chow's performance as Sing is explosive!! His relationship with Ng Man Tat (Golden Leg) is as natural as it has been in the majority of their works together. Sing's Shaolin brothers also give a lot of humorous relief!! There are incredibly spectacular kung fu soccer shots, a blend of Matrix/Crouch Tiger special effects, from their soccer training to the final game, and it delivers. Oh, and in the end, Vicki Zhao literally steals the limelight (which you have to see for yourself). The goalkeeper scenario with Bruce Lee is priceless. This film is certainly worth watching many times for maximum enjoyment!

Trivia

This film is banned in mainland China because it did not await certification before being released in Hong Kong.

Stephen Chow dubbed his own voice for the American release.

Mui's makeover in the middle of the film is a parody of Hong Kong actress Anita Mui's appearance during the 1980s.

Stephen Chow said he was inspired by the animated series Captain Tsubasa (1983).

In the Italian version, all main characters are dubbed by professional soccer players (Damiano Tommasi, Vincent Candela, Marco Delvecchio, Sinisa Mihajlovic, Giuseppe Pancaro, and Angelo Peruzzi.)
