The original script was Son Of Sardaar 2' based on the historic Battle of Saragarhi which was fought before the Tirah Campaign on 12 September 1897 between 21 Sikhs of the 36th Sikh Regiment (now the 4th Battalion of the Sikh Regiment) of British India, defending an army post, and more than 10,000 Afghan and Ora. The film was announced in 2015 but shelved due to Rajkumar Santoshi making a film on the same subject and Akshay starring in the film Kesari.

Sanjay Dutt was to reprise his role from the first part but to due visa issues, could not sign the film. Ravi Kishan was signed as his replacement.
The film's release was postponed to 1st August from 25th July to avoid clash with Saiyaara as the latter is doing good business.
Ajay's dance steps in Po Po and Pehla Tu were mocked on social media.
