TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

C. Thomas Howell had to wear colored contacts when his skin was toned to look black. His eyes are normally a goldish color and really stood out once his skin was darkened.

C. Thomas Howell's father, Chris Howell, did the stunts for this movie.

C. Thomas Howell and Rae Dawn Chong met on the set of this film, married, and later divorced.

Tim Robbins was cast in the lead, but dropped out when the filming of Howard the Duck (1986) went over schedule.

In the scene where Mark first approaches Gordon as a black man, Gordon was originally supposed to believe Mark was going to mug him. An entire scene was filmed in which Mark played along with it and made Gordon sing "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot". The scene was deleted from the final cut because, although funny when filmed, the filmmakers believed that it was inappropriate and racist.

Popular Dialogues

"Professor Banks: You've learned something I can't teach them. You've learned what it feels like to be black. Mark: No sir. Professor Banks: Beg your pardon? Mark: I don't really know what it feels like sir. If I didn't like it, I could always get out. It's not the same sir. Professor Banks: You've learned a great deal more than I thought."

"Professor Banks: Mr. Watson, I am not a humorless man, but if you insist on taking up my class time making jokes, please see to it that they are funny."
