Ross Lynch (Kyle Moore), Olivia Holt (Dani McKenzie), and Gregg Sulkin (Derek Lowe) are all previous Disney Channel stars.

Ross Lynch (Kyle Moore) and Courtney Eaton (Charlotte Alden) were dating in real life during filming.

According to Ross Lynch (Kyle Moore), although the film "had a great script", the cast of actors "really had the freedom to improvise", which can be seen in the movie.

This is the first Western film to be financed by the Chinese companies DNA Pictures and Heyi Capital. As part of their financing deal, DNA Pictures and Heyi Capital earned the rights to remake the film in China.

Asylum Entertainment bought the pitch for "Status Update" from "17 Again" writer Jason Filardi, hence the similarities between the two films.
