The footage was culled from several different shows. In order to minimize the amount of cameras in the frame, one show was all shot from one side of the stage, the next night was shot from the other side.
Director Jonathan Demme wanted to shoot additional performance footage on a soundstage made to recreate the Pantages Theater. The band vetoed this idea because they thought the lack of audience response would have hindered the energy of their performance.
The movie is notable for being the first made entirely using digital audio techniques.
As part of the promotion for the movie David Byrne did a mock interview in which he appeared in several guises (including a woman, an old man and a sleazy Hollywood type) and posed questions to himself. The "real" Byrne provided deadpan, cryptic answers such as the following explanation for the famous big suit: "I wanted my head to appear smaller and the easiest way to do that was to make my body bigger, because music is very physical and often the body understands it before the head."
David Byrne's staggering during the latter part of "Psycho Killer" was directly inspired by Fred Astaire in Royal Wedding (1951) during the song "I Left My Hat In Haiti".
"David Byrne: Thanks! Does anybody have any questions?"
"David Byrne: I've got a tape I want to play."
