It all starts with a tradition- the kavvaathu training and competition that has been followed since the time of the Britishers. We see the Police Recruits School where the leading character of the movie Arivu (Vikram Prabhu) joins along with 349 other candidates for training. Surprisingly, some candidates are above 40 and are supposed to be as vigilant as youngsters. The training is done every year under the control of Inspector Muthupandi (Madhusudhan Rao). His character is brutal and ruthless so much so that it caused the death of 18 trainees. He along with inspector Eshwaramurthy (Lal) tortured the aspirants in the name of training.  They want all people to follow orders breaking the silence with unquestionable discipline. The hard-hitting story of the film takes a turn when Arivu stands against the atrocities being committed there. His fellow trainees also come to support Arivu. The powerful system joins hands to prevent Arivu and other deserving trainees from being police officers. Then Arivu decides…well, I can’t give spoilers. To know what happens next, watch Taanakkaran.

    Why should you watch Taanakkaran?

Tanakkaran is a movie that opens layers of the faulty police system. Director Tamizh surely deserves applause to present the story in PRS. As far as the plenty of cop dramas are concerned in Indian cinema, this subject was unexplored. When you see the training program and the ruthless behavior of the officers, you feel sorry for the trainees. No action cannot be taken against them because of the agreement, signed before joining. You can identify the soul intention of the director when you feel emotionally bound with the characters.

The actors work notably in each and every scene of the movie. Certainly, Vikram Prabhu did justice with his role as Arivu which is one of the best performances of his career. The character of Anjali Nair works as a pleasant distraction in an intense film. The role done by Madhusudhan and Lal is indeed memorable as they have succeeded to deliver an impactful performance. M S Bhasker as a veteran cop has also left a mark on his performance.

Almost 90% of the movie is filmed in camps. The screenplay of some scenes is literally hair-raising. Cinematographer Madhesh Manickam has rendered earthy visuals to continue the intensity of the storyline. The background score goes well with all the shots.

In short, Tanakkaran does an effective effort to make their audience experience a realistic and intense cinema.

    Trivial Alert

    • The plot of the movie is set in the year 1999 which represents the ongoing faulty police system.
