When writer of the original novel S.E. Hinton met Matt Dillon (Tex) for the first time, he said in his thick New York accent, "Yo, S.E., I thought you was a man!" Hinton recalls initially being nervous about a city kid playing the character of a country cowboy. Now, Hinton states that she believes this was one of Dillon's best performances. Dillon went on to star in two more film adaptions of Hinton's novels, The Outsiders (1983) and Rumble Fish (1983).
The movie is set about ten years after the end of the novel "That Was Then, This is Now." Two characters make appearances in Tex (1982), which are Cathy Carlson as Tex's English teacher and the hitchhiker, who is Mark in disguise, escaped from prison.
Jim Metzler was 30 years old when he was cast as the 17-year-old Mason McCormick.
Emilio Estevez's feature film debut.
The basketball game was shot in the gymnasium of what was, at that time, Broken Arrow Senior High in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. To make it look like a nighttime game, they put thick black paper over the windowpanes. This added to the heat generated by the summer weather, as they were filming daylight hours.
"Fortune Teller: You may think of one yes or no question to yourself. Tex McCormick: [He sees a horse pass by and thinks about Rowdy] Yeah, Ok. Fortune Teller: I am sorry the answer is no."
"Tex McCormick: [Whimpers] Oh no... Mason McCormick: [walks into Tex's room] Tex? You alright? You lose Something? Tex McCormick: [laying under his bed with only his feet sticking out] It's kinda nice down here. Cool and Quiet. Mason McCormick: Yeah, well maybe you should hurry it up so you can come have breakfast under the kitchen table. Then maybe you can catch a ride under the school bus! Tex McCormick: [Gets up from under his bed and wraps a blanket around him] You would like that wouldn't you?"
