The film is a New York tale that calls back to 'Hollywood Shuffle,' about a Black artist confronting the white gatekeepers on who gets to tell a Black story and how.
Cinematographer Eric Branco explained that he actually showed up to the interview with a bag full of street photography books; "Bruce Davidson, Matt Weber, Saul Leiter, Gordon Parks, Henri Cartier-Bresson " for the director. From the beginning Radha wanted the footage to be shot on Black & white 35mm film.
The film was originally written as web series, although never got to shoot it.
Radha Blanks feature-film debut.
A documentary shooting style was adopted for the project.
"Avery: I prefer my woman thick. Radha: [chuckles] Thanks. [Changes her mind. Pushes Avery away] Radha: No, no, no."
"[Forrest Umoja Petry is sitting in front of his ancestors' photos with Radha beside him] Forrest: [facing ancestors] What we create here is imbued with a spirit of cause. Radha: [facing ancestors] Yes. Forrest: Not commerce. Radha: [now looks at Forrest] The ancestors said that? They don't want my rent paid? [clears throat] Radha: Can we try my ancestors this time?"
