With the exception of Miep and Jan Gies, and the Frank family, all of the other main characters are referred to by the pseudonyms given to them in Anne Frank's diary.
Miep Gies, played by Mary Steenburgen, died on January 11, 2010 at the age of 100, the last of the friends of the Frank family who helped hide them, provided them with food and news and who found Anne Frank's diary.
"Miep Gies: The swastika is on my passport Miss... not on me."
"Miep Gies: Damn you all! You vile, rotten people! You think you own the world and everyone in it - you don't own the world! You'll never own it! And every day you're losing more and more of what you did own of it and thank God for that! Our day will come, and when it does, we'll make you pay... for everything! For everything you've done!"
