Marc Maron and Natasha Lyonne's second animated film together, after DC League of Super-Pets (2022). Coincidentally, the latter film was released the same year as The Bad Guys (2022), and both movies also had guinea pigs as the main antagonists.
Production began in February of 2023. Originally slated for a Spring 2026 release date, the film was rushed into production to be released before Zootopia 2 (2025), after the latter was announced for a Thanksgiving 2025 release date.
