When the Minions are about to sleep with Gru because of the thunder, you can hear three Indonesian words. They are "Nasi Goreng" which means "Fried Rice", "Kecap Manis" which means "Sweet Soy Sauce" and "Terima Kasih" which translates to "Thank You". Pierre Coffin, who voices the minions, has an Indonesian mother.
Gru goes to an ice cream shop and skips the line by spraying all the customers with his "cheese ray," yelling "Cheese ray! Cheese ray! Cheese ray!" This is a reference to the first Despicable Me film, in which he freezes all customers at a coffee shop with his freeze ray, yelling "Freeze ray! Freeze ray! Freeze ray!" Minions: The Rise of Gru is a prequel to Despicable Me, and so the freeze ray is perhaps a result of improvements made on the cheese ray; perhaps Gru realized freezing people was more effective than covering them in liquid cheese.
This film has a unique distinction among theatrical releases, as it is both a prequel and a sequel. It is a sequel to the first Minions film, which is a prequel to the Despicable Me films, along with this film.
During the airport scene, 'Freedonia' appears on the Arrivals list on the screen. Freedonia is shown in Despicable Me 3 (2017) as the fictional country where Gru's twin brother, Dru, lives
"Gru: [to Otto] Did you just trade my future for a PET ROCK?"
"Gru: When you guys tracked me down after responding to my Ad, my first thought was: "Where did all these little tater-tots come from, and where did they find so much Denim?""
