Tom Bosley hosts a tribute to the American musical theater taped before a live audience featuring dozens of stars recreating their original performances. Among the show-stoppers are Chita Rivera's Spanish Rose dance in "Bye, Bye, Bireie," Ray Walston as the Devil in "Damn Yankees," Nell Carter singing the Fats Waller classic "Cash for Trash" from "Ain't Misbehavin," Glynis Johns with "Send in the Clowns" from "A Little Night Music," Barry Bostwick from "Grease," and many more.

This special was originally called "Showstoppers: The Best of Broadway" and premiered on the pay cable Entertainment Channel in 1982. For home video release it was retitled "That's Singing: The Best of Broadway."

Wayne Cilento, who is shown in the opening credits performing the number, "I Can Do That." However, his performance of the number is cut from the broadcast's release on VHS titled, "Showstoppers: The Best of Broadway." Any number that originally featured Michael Bennett choreography had to be re-staged for this broadcast.
