Stephen Rea is credited as only playing Pa in the film, but he also plays the adult Francie, who narrates his story in voice-overs throughout the film, uncredited.
Eamonn O'Shea reportedly went into his audition and asked if the actor who had gone before him was better, and if he was, there was no point in reading his prepared monologue.
The title role was originally given to child actor Byron Hayes. Production was halted so that Neil Jordan could make 'Michael Collins' instead. By the time production picked up again, Byron Hayes was too old for the role.

Author of the source novel Pat McCabe made a few attempts at writing a screen adaption of his book which strayed rather further from his book than the film does. Neil Jordan, co-writer of the screenplay and director, brought it back closer to the original novel.
