The name of Donald Sutherland's character is "Homer Simpson", which is also a lead character name in The Simpsons (1989) and its spin-offs. Apparently the naming is purely a coincidence, as the cartoon character was named after real people that cartoonist Matt Groening knew. As a gag, Sutherland voiced a guest character in The Simpsons: Lisa the Iconoclast (1996) who meets the more famous Homer Simpson.
Actress Peg Entwistle actually did commit suicide by jumping from the top of the "Hollywood" sign in the hills above Hollywood in 1932. She is being talked about by a Tour Guide while Tod Hackett (William Atherton) and Faye Greener (Karen Black) are on a date.
The home of Claude Estee is the famous Ennis House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The Los Angeles house is built of cast concrete blocks and based on a Mayan temple design. It was built in 1924.
Using diffusion filters and camera angles that often let sunlight deflect off of characters and objects within the frame, this film is considered by some one of the most uniquely photographed of the 1970s, and Conrad L. Hall received one of its two Oscar nominations, his for Best Cinematography.
Karen Black claims behind-the-scenes gossip stemming from this production ruined her career.
"Homer Simpson: [introducing himself] Simpson, Homer Simpson."
"[first lines] Mrs. Odlesh: It isn't as splashy as some other places, but we pride ourselves on being a little classier. Tod Hackett: [referring to a large crack in the plaster wall] Hmmm, the crack's real. Mrs. Odlesh: Oh yes. We call this our earthquake cottage. Mrs. Porter had occupancy then. During the big one in '33. Property damage ran into the millions. Tod Hackett: Will you fix it if I stayed for a while? Mrs. Odlesh: Oh no! No! This is our showplace. Mrs. Porter wouldn't let us touch that wall. She worked that sampler herself to cover over the hole. Alrighty. I hope you'll be very happy here. Tod Hackett: Thank you."
