Grace states only five women over 40 have had number one singles, and only one who is African American: at the time of filming these were Sia (aged 40), Madonna (42), Bette Midler (43), Cher (52), and Tina Turner (44). However, Aretha Franklin (45) also hit number one, albeit on a duet with George Michael, meaning technically two African American singers had achieved the feat. By the time the film was released Mariah Carey (49) had also added to this number. In addition, at the time of filming Sia was the most recent artist to achieve a number one aged over 40. She has worked extensively with both Greg Kurstin, who wrote and produced songs for the soundtrack of this movie, and Diplo, who has a small role in the film as producer R Dubs.
The mother of Tracee Ellis Ross is Oscar nominee/Golden Globe Winning actress/superstar singer/icon Diana Ross. The mother of Dakota Johnson is Oscar nominee/Golden Globe Winning actress Melanie Griffith. Melanie plays Tess in this film, a nod for her celebrated Tess McGill in Working Girl (1988). She appears approximately 84 minutes into the film as an extra wearing a white suit, sitting as a passenger 2 rows in front of Maggie on the ferry to Catalina. Being on the ferry could have also been a nod to her role in Working Girl where the Staten Island Ferry was integral to the plot.
Dakota Johnson and Ice Cube previously appeared in 21 Jump Street (2012).

The single became Ross's second No. 1 hit in the UK Singles Chart. It also hit No. 1 in Australia, Ireland, and Zimbabwe. In New Zealand, it peaked at No. 3 and it made the top 5 in South Africa.
Wanuri Kahiu was originally going to direct the movie.
