The series appears to be an uncredited direct adaptation of Douglas Fairbairn's 1973 novel Shoot. In 1974, Shoot was translated as The Hunt. The book was adapted into a 1976 movie, Shoot, directed by Harvey Hart and written by Richard Berg.
Reportedly had a cost of around $16 million and is fully completed, but Apple and Gaumont have been unable to clear retroactive rights because they cannot locate the holders of the copyright of the original book's the series is supposedly based on. The novel is out of circulation, the original publisher no longer handles it, and attempts to trace the heirs of author Douglas Fairbairn - including hiring a private investigator - have failed.
The premiere of the series was scheduled for Dec. 3, 2025 but was pulled after plagiarism accusations surfaced. Apple removed all traces of the series online, and producer Gaumont announced a temporary postponement while conducting an internal review, leaving the show's future uncertain.
