The Idol Review

Sam Levinson's series, The Idol, is a provocative and sensational drama that raises questions about its purpose. The intense and voyeuristic nature of the show, including explicit scenes with Lily-Rose Depp and Abel Tesfaye, can make viewers uncomfortable. The story follows Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp), a pop star recovering from a cancelled tour and a nervous breakdown. Determined to regain stardom, she surrounds herself with a team that includes Leia (Rachel Sennott) and Chaim (Hank Azaria). A passionate affair with Tedros, the club owner and spiritual guru, sets off unexpected events. The Idol explores the challenges and negative aspects of fame, impacting self-confidence. Initially appearing misogynistic with a provocative 80s tone, the series offers a glimpse into unfamiliar aspects of the music industry. Lily-Rose Depp delivers an exceptional performance, capturing Jocelyn's vulnerabilities. However, Abel Tesfaye's portrayal of Tedros lacks chemistry. Jane Adams as Nikki and Hank Azaria as Chaim shine in their roles. The Idol delves into the music industry in an overtly sexualized manner. The first episode scratches the surface, with potential for future episodes. Yet, compared to Levinson's work on "Euphoria," compelling storytelling is lacking. Levinson faces the challenge of refocusing the narrative, as the emphasis on sexuality has overshadowed the overall story.

TRIVIA

Trivia

Director Amy Seimetz left the project on April 25, 2022 amid a creative overhaul of the series. Co-creator Sam Levinson took over as the series director.

On April 25, 2022 Variety reported that the show would be reworked and would undergo significant re-shoots with changes to its cast and crew due to a change in creative directions. Reports at the time claimed that co-creator and actor Abel "The Weeknd" Tesfaye felt the series was leaning too much into a "female perspective," though Tesfaye has denied such claims.

Similar to Sam Levinson's Euphoria (2019) series, the production of The Idol was met with reports of on-set turmoil due to a poor working environment, last-minute script rewrites, and budgetary issues.

Marci Liroff, an intimacy coordinator, was asked by Variety what she thought about the scene where a fictional intimacy coordinator was shoved in a closet after trying to prevent Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) from revealing her breasts for a photo shoot. Liroff said she was "appalled" and felt "really betrayed that they were making fun of us and the job. They were using us as the butt of the joke."

Rolling Stone first reported the on-set creative conflicts regarding Amy Seimetz exiting as director and executive producer. In response to the article, The Weeknd simply shared a clip from the series where his character (Tedros) remarked that the magazine company is "ancient."
