The scene where the Giant's hand was in the living room, watching a Maypo cereal advert, was changed in the "Signature Edition" to an advert for the Disneyland attraction, Tomorrowland. Brad Bird had originally wanted the Tomorrowland advert in the film, as an homage to his mentors, but Disney would not give him clearance to use it. Bird ended up directing the film Tomorrowland (2015).
Brad Bird was in part inspired to make this film as a memorial to his sister Susan, who died at the hands of her estranged husband by gun violence. His pitch was this: "What if a gun had a soul and didn't want to be a gun?"
Brad Bird personally animated the scene where Hogarth rants to Dean about his problems in a super fast pace after he gives him Espresso. Because the character is talking and moving about so rapidly, Bird had to actually draw at least some part of every inbetween, the frames in an animated film between the key frames.
The last name for Annie and Hogarth, Hughes, is an homage to Ted Hughes, author of the original children's book upon which the film is based.
Excluding the yells and groans, The Iron Giant only says a total of 53 words.
"[as the Giant flies toward the missle] Hogarth Hughes: [in the Giant's mind] You are who you choose to be. The Iron Giant: Superman."
"Hogarth Hughes: [to the Giant, in battle mode] It's bad to kill. Guns kill. And you don't have to be a gun. You are what you choose to be. You choose. Choose."
